In this full-day, interactive workshop we will explore the ways in which we can maximise the power of mentoring through an understanding of our own potential, and that of our mentoring partners. We learn how to use the dispositions and language of intellectual virtues to enrich and deepen mentoring conversations. This innovative professional learning includes both early career teachers and mentors working alongside one another through a series of innovative and engaging activities.
It is important that participants attend the course with either their mentor if they are an early career teacher (ECT); or with the early career teacher/s they are mentoring if they are a mentor. Schools may elect to pair their attending mentors with more than one ECT from the school. We suggest that a maximum of 3 ECTs per attending mentor from your school will ensure a quality learning experience
Future-focused mentoring recognises that teachers are working in a profession of rapid change, complexities, and escalating demands; and therefore aims to nurture and leverage intellectual virtues such as curiosity, intellectual humility, thoroughness, open-mindedness, and tenacity. This approach of mentoring supports early career teachers and mentors to understand their own potential, develop stronger mentoring relationships, and explore possibilities for practice that can take them into the future.
This course is based on current and on-going research led by the University of Southern Queensland and the University of New South Wales. The Future-focused mentoring project aims to:
- Develop mentoring approaches for early career teachers in their second
and third years of the profession
- Investigate strategic mentoring processes and procedures that will assist
schools to develop and sustain achievable and manageable mentoring
programs across diverse school contexts

Ellen Larsen is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ). She was a classroom teacher and educational leader for over 25 years, including conceptualising and implementing large scale professional learning projects with teachers at all career stages. Ellen now works with preservice teachers to develop capabilities in curriculum and pedagogy and evidence-based teaching and learning. She has been involved in program accreditation and the implementation and coordination of the Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) for the university. Ellen served on the Australian Teacher Education Association (ATEA) Executive 2020-2021, and is currently on the executive for the Australian Association for Education Research (AARE). Ellen is the national convenor for the Teachers’ Work and Lives Special Interest Group. Her research interests are in the area of teachers’ work and lives, focused on the work of early career teachers, professional learning, mentoring, professional identity, education policy and professionalism.
